The independent institute for environmental questions UfU e.V: is a scientific institute and a citizen organization; it was founded at the beginning of 1990. UfU works in the fields
Climate protection, energy efficiency, environmental law, resource protection as well as
Environmental education, participation and environmental communication
In this time, there are 26 workers in the UfU; therefore, the UfU works together regularly with permanent free workers. The main office of the institute is in Berlin; in addition, UfU has had a second office in Haale/Saale since its founding.
The UfU works in the legal form of a registered association. It is recognized by the tax office Berlin as a non-profit organization in the fields of education, science and environmental protection. Around 250 members and donators support the Institute today with their contributions, donations and activities.
UfU acts in the tradition that it has helped establish as a civic movement in the DDR. It strengthens citizen engagement through environmental political education and advice. UfU initiates environmentally fair development and processes. It initiates and supervises applied scientific projects, actions and networks that are public and socially relevant, pushing for the transformation of ecologically unsustainable conditions and requiring and promoting the participation citizens.
UfU sees itself as an independent institution with an initiation, mediation and moderation function. It conducts local, regional, national and international projects and participates in global networks.
Work focus points in Berlin are:
Concept and material development to climate protection, climate change adaptation and energy themes.
Research projects on the use of incentive systems related to renewable energy and energy saving.
