Survival is the single organization that supports indigenous peoples worldwide. It was founded in 1969 after a Sunday Times article by Norma Lewis shed light on the massacres, land expropriation and genocides in the Brazilian Amazon. Like many other atrocities of our time, the racist oppression of the Brazilian indigenous peoples happened in the name of “economic growth”.

Today, Survival has supporters in 82 countries and has offices in Berlin, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, San Francisco and Amsterdam. We work in three complementary ways for the rights of indigenous peoples: Enlightenment, lobby work and campaigns. Outside of that we offer indigenous peoples a platform where they can directly speak to the outside world.

We work together closely with local indigenous organizations and concentrate on the indigenous peoples who have lost the most. In principal, these are the people who are just now stepping into the contact with the outside world.

We believe that public opinion is the most effective force for change. Its strength will make it increasingly difficult – and ultimately impossible – for governments and businesses to suppress indigenous peoples.
