The starting point and central focus of the foundation is the House of Democracy and Human Rights, which shares its name. Located at Greifswalder Straße 4 in Berlin, it serves as a space for ongoing civic and human rights activism. Civic movements operate on the principles of grassroots democracy and dialogue. Their core principle is not the rationality of economic utilization but rather mutual understanding. The consolidation of societal competence, as it arises among people in solidarity, is the most significant force that can stand against state or private domination.

The political independence of the house is based on the work and financial contributions of its tenants. On the one hand, the barriers to using our spaces must be kept as low as possible to enable many to work here. On the other hand, revenue must secure the maintenance of the house and the foundation's continued work.

From time to time, we manage to meet a self-imposed goal: facilitating the emergence of new social movements through the networking of various groups and the "free spaces" provided by the house. This was the case during the anti-Hartz protests at the end of 2002 and the Monday demonstrations in East Germany in 2004. The prerequisite for this is long-term perseverance, which is necessary to maintain a house that does not have the rich and powerful on its side.
