The upheaval in the Arab countries in 2010/2011 has opened up new areas of action for those living in this region. The events are marked by massive human rights violations, also in Egypt and Tunisia, which have so far experienced peaceful protests. Some 15 social and political activists in Germany gathered at demonstrations and would like to work together for human rights in the Arab states, publicize human rights violations and show solidarity with the democratic movements. They joined OMRAS e.V and would like to renew the association. These young groups consist of many nationalities.
The organization for Human Rights in the Arabic States e.V. (OMRAS) was founded in 1992 as a party-independent and confession (???) organization. Migration and integration projects in Berlin are a central component of this association’s work. Cuts in funding by the City of Berlin in 2004 meant that the integration and counselling work of Dar Al-Maschura (headquarters of the association with advice, education, and cultural and public relations) was almost entirely on a voluntary basis. As a result, the organization was only able to advise individuals on questions of asylum law and integration. In cooperation with other associations, OMRAS representatives gave lectures on human rights and human rights violations in the Arab states as well as on integration policy in Germany.
OMRAS e.V belongs to the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) and is recognized by the UN Social Council as a regional organization. AOHR can be described as a forum that included about 32 human rights organizations from Arab countries. The General Secretariat in Cairo, Egypt, coordinates the work of the organizations and holds the AOHR General Assembly every three years.
