Memorial was founded in 1988 as a civil rights movement in the former Soviet Union with the aim of working with the effects of the tyranny of the communist system and commemorating its victims. Today the society encompasses 70 national and regional organizations in eight countries with numerous members and a contemporary historical archive with over three million victim names. The first chairman of the society was the nuclear physicist, dissident and Noble Peace Prize recipient Andrej Sacharow.
MEMORIAL Germany e.V. is committed the principles of tolerance and non-violence as well as to the historical enlightenment and for the protection of human rights in Russia and former Soviet Union countries.
In 1993, the support association for MEMORIAL St. Petersburg was founded in Berlin. In 2001, it changed its name to MEMORIAL Germany e.V. due to its expanded range of tasks. Besides the humanitarian aid for Soviet Gulag survivors, the organization engages in civil society exchanges with Eastern Europe, the observance of human rights and critical review of the past. The organization also organizes bilateral youth exchanges and examines the effects of the Soviet regime on Germany. The non-profit’s members work exclusively on a voluntary basis.
MEMORIAL unites people from different political directions, religious backgrounds and social classes. The basis for working together is the rejection of all forms of discrimination, violence, and tranny.
The society emerged as a civil rights movement during the perestroika period in the former Soviet Union with the aim of working up the effects of the tyranny of Stalinism and to commemorate the victims. The first chairman of the Society was the atomic physicist and dissident, Andrej Sacharow.
