Amnesty International is the largest worldwide human rights organization with over three million members, facilitators and activists. Amnesty International was founded in 1961 and received the Nobel Peace Prize for its work in 1977. Our Mandate is based on the United Nation’s 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We deploy ourselves worldwide for the promotion of human rights and are committed to the victims of human rights violations – Amnesty International is independent from government ideologies, economic interests, political parties and religions.
Amnesty International is organized through grassroots democracy and survives on the engagement of its volunteers. In Germany, Amnesty International has more than 120,000 facilitators of which 25,000 are members. The Berlin-Brandenburg District is the largest district in Germany with over 1000 facilitators and members. Around fifty groups are engaged in Berlin and Brandenburg with differing themes and focus points for human rights in various locations around the world: for example, for women’s rights, against torture and the death penalty, for refugee rights or against human rights violations based on sexual identity. Our groups work with the human rights situations in Russia and Belarus, Turkey, the French-speaking countries of Africa (francophone Africa), and in many other countries and regions.
A central function/key role of Amnesty International is to collect information over human rights violations and make this information public/ publicize this information.
