"The Second Attack"

Film screening & discussion

event picture

Film event marking the commemoration of 30 years since the racist pogrom in Rostock-Lichtenhagen – "The Second Attack," documentary film, 62 minutes, Dt. 2018, directed by Mala Reinhardt. –

This is not just a film about the pogrom of Rostock-Lichtenhagen, marking the commemoration of 30 years since. It is a film that tells the story of Rostock not as a singular event, but rather as part of a series of racist violence in united Germany since 1990, from the perspective of those affected, survivors, relatives of the victims. The film unravels the state of our society, which makes such attacks possible. It tells of the moment of injury, of grief and anger, of visible and invisible tears, of alliances and resistance, captures perceptive political analyses. The "first attack" always comes from the Nazis themselves, says Ibrahim Arslan in the film, who survived the arson attack in Mölln as a seven-year-old; the "second attack" comes from society, which does not sufficiently prosecute the guilty and plays them down, which harasses and suspects those affected and hurts them once again. A film accuses - and hits a nerve.

After the film screening there will be a discussion with Mai Phuong Kollath, one of the protagonists of the documentary, former contract worker in Rostock from Vietnam, today graduate educator, diversity trainer and actress. Moderation: Angelika Nguyen, film scholar and author.
